Good Deeds Matter: Research Confirms That Kindness Opens Hearts
Research continues to confirm something the Scriptures declare: our good deeds speak volumes. When non-Christians see genuine acts of kindness and service, it stirs something deep within them. In fact, studies show that witnessing selfless action doesn’t just make people feel good, it leaves a lasting impression that can shape attitudes, values, and even openness to faith.
A recent study, Analysis of the Moral Elevation Experience in Adolescents (2025), found that young people who witness others making a difference experience “moral elevation.” This is a warm, uplifting feeling that inspires them to act in more prosocial, generous ways themselves. In other words, when someone sees a follower of Jesus serving or doing good, it doesn’t just touch their emotions. It motivates them to consider a higher standard for their own lives.
Psychologists Jonathan Haidt and Sara Algoe call this effect “other-praising emotions” such as elevation, gratitude, and admiration. In Witnessing Excellence in Action (2009), their research shows that when people encounter acts of genuine service and sacrifice, they not only feel moved but are also more likely to imitate what they’ve seen. That means when followers of Jesus demonstrate the Father’s love through good deeds without an agenda, they’re modelling something contagious. Non-Christians may not be ready to hear a sermon, but they cannot ignore love in action.
Even more fascinating, science shows that moral behaviour can actually make a person more attractive. In The Effect of Moral Behavior on Facial Attractiveness (2023), the study revealed that when people observe kindness, generosity and integrity, they often perceive the person displaying those qualities as more appealing. While physical attractiveness fades, moral beauty leaves a glow that others can’t help but notice. Isn’t it striking that modern research affirms what Scripture has declared for centuries?
Jesus put it plainly in Matthew 5:16,
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Jesus knew that good deeds are more than niceties—they are powerful demonstrations of the Father’s love that draw people toward Him.
This is why good-deeds evangelism is so vital today. In a world weary of empty words and suspicious of religious claims, tangible expressions of Jesus’ love break down walls. Whether it’s volunteering in a community-engagement project, showing hospitality and kindness to a neighbour, visiting the lonely or advocating for the marginalised, such deeds make an impact. They point beyond us to the God who first loved us.
Evangelism is not only about proclamation but demonstration. When the two walk hand in hand, the Gospel becomes undeniable. People may argue with doctrines or dismiss apologetics, but it’s hard to resist the sight of genuine love in action.
So let us take seriously the call of Titus 3:8:
This statement is trustworthy … those who believe in God should be careful to maintain good deeds. These things are good and beneficial for people.”
Our service is never wasted. Every act of kindness has the potential to open a heart to Jesus. Remember, in a world where you can be just about anything, be kind. You may be the only Bible another person ever reads.
